Donald Trump is projected to win North Carolina – the first of the seven critical swing states.
Trump took 50.8% of the vote in the south-eastern state, compared to Harris’ 48%.
It’s a key victory for the former president in his bid for a second term in office.
North Carolina is a battleground state which has been fairly evenly split each time since 2000.
The state itself has a rich history going back as far as 700AD. The first Spanish explorer visited in the 1540s but it wasn’t until 1584 that Sir Walter Raleigh arrived with settlers who built the first English settlement in 1585.
It’s believed that the state got its name around the 1600s and was thought to be named by King Charles I.
Now North Carolina is the 28th largest state and has nearly 11 million people, growing 9.5% in the last decade.
They have predominantly voted republican with the only exception to this being 2008 where they voted democrat with a 0.3% gap between the votes.
The widest gap was in 2016 which was 3.6%.
